WORKSHOP [Synchronous/Virtual] [Synchronous/In-Person]

DESCRIPTION

The NeuroSculpting Workshop offers an immersive tabletop game that illustrates how the brain copes with early-childhood trauma and intergenerational trauma. This game has been developed by the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University.

Participants will engage in building brains (using craft supplies) of children (0-8 years of age) to observe how exposure to early-life stressors shapes survival circuits, and behavioral, social and emotional development. By integrating neurodevelopment and trauma-informed counseling, this experience fosters a deeper understanding of how traumas continue to shape brains of today. The session concludes with a facilitated discussion on developmental environments, stressors and brain architecture through a trauma-informed lens.

Children’s development is shaped by a constellation of influences from their developmental environment, the full scope of experiences and exposures that children encounter in the places where they live, grow, play, and learn. Those environments can include both positive and negative influences. Together, we can work toward a world where every child grows up in a developmental environment where they have what they need to thrive—surrounded by supportive relationships, positive experiences and opportunities, and broader environments that support their health and well-being.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to recognize the neuroendocrine mechanisms behind trauma and epigenetic inheritance.
  2. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to integrate trauma-informed frameworks into their practice for fostering resilience and healing.
  3. At the end of the session, attendees will be able to contrast the effects of tolerable versus toxic stressors on brain development.
